Description & Objectives:

Aim
The aim of this workshop is to provide theoretical education and in-person training to scientists, physicians, surgeons and technicians who have interest in the field of beta cell replacement therapy and regenerative medicine. Topics that will be covered is new technologies in islet isolation and transplantation, 3D bioprinting, organoid applications, and stem cell derived therapies.

Description of the format
The workshop is composed of 2 parts, a 1-day theoretical part followed by a 1.5-day practical part.
Part 1 is made up of lectures given by expert speakers coming from several European centers active in Beta Cell Replacement Therapy and Regenerative Medicine.
Part 2 consists of a display of novel techniques in combination with hands-on activities. We will demonstrate promising new modalities in islet isolation and tissue engineering. Using small groups, participants will be able to learn about automated systems for isolation, counting of islets, generation of islet organoids, and engineering scaffolds by 3D bioprinting. Supervision will be given by qualified personnel from the host institution and other European cooperating centers. In addition, we will also introduce other advanced cell-based therapies in diabetes and discuss GMP-related aspects for clinical implementation.

Educational Objectives
After attending this workshop participants will be able to:

·       Improve knowledge of islet isolation and transplantation

·       Implement new cell-based therapies for diabetes

·       Design experiments with organoids and spheroids

Establish cell laden scaffolds by using 3D bioprinting technology

Target Group:

Basic scientists, physicians, surgeons and technicians with specific interest in the field of islet isolation and novel beta cell replacement and regenerative strategies in the context of diabetes.
