European Donation Committee

The European Donation Committee (EDC) was founded in 2005. One of the tasks of the EDC is to enhance national, regional and/or local initiatives and create a win-win situation with a common European denominator. Expertise and knowledge in the field of donation has to be promoted and exchanged.

The main issues to be promoted in the field of donation are:
1. Create awareness of professionals, authorities and the public towards all aspects of donation;
2. Enhance quality of donor organs/tissues to maintain or improve viability and of the entire donation process;
3. Establish/encourage guidelines for best practice;
4. Gain access to European numbers of donation.

The tools to do this are:
- Communication via a network that has to be established for all those involved in organ and donation;
- Research: epidemiological, fundamental strategic, applied clinical;
- Education: different levels, towards certification;
- Development of instruments/applications to facilitate the process of donation;
- Funding to be gained from governmental/non governmental agencies and the European Commission.

Members of this Committe should come from a multidisciplinary background including donation and transplantation professionals active in deceased donor procurement, living donation, recipient coordination and national transplant organizations.

The EDC aims to provide a platform and forum for all donor and transplant coordinators, surgeons and other professionals active in the field. Exchange of knowledge and education are key factors to be developed by the EDC in collaboration with active members from all over Europe.

Symposia and meetings will be organised in conjunction with the ESOT Congress as well as in between meetings to focus on special topics and the current state-of-the-art.

A successful Kick-off Meeting in Juan-les-Pins was organized on April 2-3, 2009. Read on
