International Course on Split Liver Transplantation and small-for-size Grafting

This course is a continuation of the split liver courses previously organised in Hamburg and the small-for-size symposia of Ghent. It aims at fully preparing liver transplant surgeons to perform split liver transplantations.

In the symposium part a full review of the different aspects, from surgical anatomy, through patient and donor selection and organisational issues is performed. The technical aspects of the procedures and the recent advances are discussed by different experts in the field giving their opinion on the best surgical approach. Beyond technical aspects we also put attention to correct donor and recipient choice, logistics and especially the search for a suitable allocation system. Therefore we invited colleagues which are already working in a successful split liver cooperation programme. Special attention is given to the issues of transplanting small-for-size grafts. This part should be of interest to both the beginning and the expert liver transplant specialist in the field of living donor liver transplantation. In the practical course session participants will have the opportunity to perform both the classical (left-lateral) split procedure and the full-left full-right split-liver procedure on a human liver. They will learn a standardised and systematic technique for both procedures under the guidance of top experts in the field. Registry data show clearly the importance of the learning curve when a center starts using these techniques. With this course we aim to provide a possibility to increase skilfulness and avoiding part of this learning curve. The course is an official course of the ESOT educational programme. It is endorsed by the UEMS Division of Transplantation Surgery. EACCME points have been requested for both parts. We would be honoured to welcome you in Ghent as our guests and hope that this symposium and course may motivate both young and experienced colleagues to make profit of this opportunity to increase the number of transplantable grafts.

Bernard de Hemptinne, Xavier Rogiers, Roberto Troisi.
